The questions that sit either side of choosing a course: what the law requires, what it costs, how long it takes, and what changes if you want to be paid for it.

The legal requirement

Boat licences, state by state

Compare all 8

A recreational boat licence has nothing to do with a sailing certificate. Whether you need one depends on the engine, the state and, in New South Wales, the speed. Most cruising yachts carry an auxiliary well above the power thresholds used in Queensland, Western Australia, Victoria and South Australia — so a sailor who needs no licence under sail may still need one to motor out of the marina.
