The course in context
Powerboat training is useful to sailors who operate tenders, assist club activities or plan to become instructors. Handling a powered craft is a distinct skill: previous yacht sailing does not automatically provide precise low-speed control or the ability to support other boats safely.
Before you start
The current Powerboat Handling programme requires its Essential Skills e-learning before the practical course. Confirm age, licence and local operating requirements with the centre. Training completion and a state boating licence are related only where the relevant regulator accepts that pathway.
Skills you will develop
Confined-area handling
Develop controlled manoeuvring around marinas and other restricted spaces. Understanding the boat’s response is more useful than learning one approach by memory.
Craft and engine awareness
Learn how the boat’s characteristics and equipment affect operation. Preparation and checks belong alongside driving practice.
Navigation and conditions
Apply navigation techniques and consider the effect of waves and swell. Safety Boat Operator is a separate development option for supporting water-based activities.
Training and assessment
Australian Sailing describes an eight-hour practical component following the online learning. Ask which boat is used and how practical driving time is shared. Do not assume the handling course includes all rescue techniques needed for a safety-boat role.
