- What it is not
- A keelboat certificate is not a cruising-yacht qualification. Charter companies will want to see more.

The course in context
The Australian Sailing keelboat programme separates crewing, helming and skippering into useful stages. This allows learners to build practical confidence before adding responsibility. It focuses on keelboat sailing skills and should not be assumed to cover every system or navigation requirement of an extended liveaboard cruise.
Before you start
Start Crewing introduces the foundations. If you already sail, describe your experience to the centre and ask which course fits: time aboard is not necessarily experience at the helm or in charge of a crew.
Skills you will develop
Start Crewing
Develop the basic sail-handling and crew routines that make you a useful participant. Understanding instructions and safe line handling are important early outcomes.
Start Helming
Take greater responsibility for steering and coordinating sail trim. Handling exercises develop control rather than relying on other crew to correct every problem.
Start Skippering and beyond
Progress towards organising the boat and crew, with additional modules for interests such as spinnakers and racing. Confirm the exact content of the course you choose.
Training and assessment
Ask about the training boat, maximum group size and role rotation. A modular programme is valuable only if each learner has enough hands-on time. Verify what further navigation or cruising training your intended sailing would require.
