IYT International Flotilla Skipper
Command of your own yacht, but within a flotilla with a lead boat in reach.
Designed for someone progressing toward skippering a yacht within a flotilla environment.
It should be understood as a skipper certificate with operating limitations rather than an unrestricted command qualification.

- Not the same as Bareboat Skipper, and charter companies know the difference.

The course in context
Flotilla Skipper is aimed at taking charge within an organised group of boats with supporting leadership. Support nearby does not remove responsibility for your own crew and vessel. The course is most relevant when you want to make the transition into command but your intended holiday or sailing programme includes a flotilla structure.
Before you start
Ask the school to check your crew experience and current IYT entry requirements. A first skipper course is much easier when basic handling no longer consumes all your attention. Clarify the certificate’s operating restrictions and the flotilla company’s acceptance before building a trip around it.
Skills you will develop
Preparing your boat
Move from completing individual crew jobs to checking that the yacht and people are ready for departure. Learn how to brief a plan that everyone can follow.
Coastal decision-making
Bring navigation, weather and boat handling together for the intended cruising area. The lead boat is support, not a replacement for knowing your own situation.
Working within the flotilla
Understand the communication and coordination expected by the operator. Ask how changes to the group plan are communicated and who makes decisions aboard each yacht.
Training and assessment
Confirm the balance of theory, practical training and assessment with an approved IYT school. A course preparing you for flotilla sailing is not the same product as a supported holiday. Ask which parts of the booking are instruction and which are simply supervised cruising.
