IYT Yachtmaster Offshore

IYT currently identifies Yachtmaster Offshore as an advanced recreational certificate for yachts operating up to 150 nautical miles offshore.
The IYT passport pathway currently states substantial sea-time requirements before entry to the Offshore course.

- Recreational. Commercial work in Australia runs through AMSA, not through here.

The course in context
IYT Yachtmaster Offshore is for experienced recreational sailors extending their command responsibilities beyond coastal day trips. Good preparation includes sustained watchkeeping, passage decisions and managing the boat’s systems. It is not enough to have been aboard for a long voyage if someone else made every operational decision.
Before you start
Ask the approved school to compare your logged passages, skipper experience and supporting qualifications with IYT’s current requirements. Confirm the sail, power or catamaran category. Do not confuse this recreational route with IYT’s professional qualifications or the separate RYA Yachtmaster system.
Skills you will develop
Offshore preparation
Think about the boat, spares, crew and route as one operating plan. A minor defect can matter more when outside assistance is distant.
Navigation over longer periods
Maintain an organised picture of position, progress and changing conditions. Handover quality becomes important when different crew members take responsibility through the night.
Leadership and contingencies
Balance safe progress with fatigue and equipment limitations. Useful training explores the reasoning behind a decision, not only whether the boat reaches its destination.
Training and assessment
Obtain a clear breakdown of theory, practical preparation and assessment. Ask what evidence is required before enrolment and what happens if more development is recommended. A course titled “Yachtmaster preparation” may not include the examination or award itself.
