IYT Yachtmaster Coastal
IYT’s first Yachtmaster level, in sail, power and catamaran versions.
An advanced recreational qualification for command of qualifying recreational yachts within its operating limitations.
It requires substantially greater experience and competence than beginner skipper courses.

The course in context
IYT Yachtmaster Coastal develops the ability to manage more demanding coastal cruising. It should be approached as an experienced-sailor qualification, not simply the next holiday course after bareboat training. The emphasis shifts towards decisions that must remain sound when timing, visibility or crew workload becomes less convenient.
Before you start
Have an IYT school review your logbook against the current Coastal requirements, including the type of sea time and supporting certificates. Ask it to separate formal eligibility from readiness for assessment. Meeting a minimum does not necessarily mean you have recently practised all the skills needed.
Skills you will develop
Coastal planning
Integrate route choices, weather and navigation with the crew’s ability. Prepare alternatives rather than relying on the preferred destination remaining suitable.
Command and communication
Make your intentions understandable and share tasks without losing oversight. The skipper’s role includes noticing when the crew’s workload is becoming excessive.
Applied seamanship
Bring handling and systems awareness into the passage plan. A competent sailor should be able to explain why a chosen approach suits that boat and situation.
Training and assessment
Confirm whether your booking includes preparation, the assessment itself or both. The IYT qualification is distinct from the RYA award with a similar name. Ask for the current IYT syllabus and operating scope rather than treating the two systems as automatically interchangeable.
