The course in context
IYT Yachtmaster Ocean focuses on the knowledge needed for ocean navigation and planning. It is a specialist progression for experienced skippers, not a beginner’s introduction to bluewater sailing. Understanding the navigation method is only one part of preparing a vessel and crew for a real ocean crossing.
Before you start
Confirm the current IYT Offshore prerequisite and any further entry evidence directly with the school. Ask which navigation tools and reference materials are required. If your chartwork is rusty, revising it before celestial study will allow you to concentrate on the new ideas rather than relearning the basics at the same time.
Skills you will develop
Celestial navigation
Work through the relationship between observations, time and a calculated position. Clear records and careful checking are more useful than memorising an unexplained sequence.
Ocean planning
Consider how long-distance routing changes preparation and weather decisions. A crossing cannot be treated as a series of convenient marina stops.
Navigation resilience
Explore what different navigation methods can and cannot tell you. Understanding a backup method requires practice, not simply carrying the equipment aboard.
Training and assessment
Clarify the course delivery and examination requirements with IYT and the approved provider. Do not assume that an Ocean theory programme includes an ocean passage or that it awards the RYA qualification of the same name. The certificate’s scope should be clear before booking.
