The course in context
Keelboat day-sailing development connects boat handling with planning an outing beyond a familiar exercise area. The important step is taking account of route, conditions, crew and return arrangements. It is not the same qualification as RYA Day Skipper Practical on a cruising yacht.
Before you start
Ask the centre which named module it offers and the basic sailing standard required. You should be comfortable handling the training boat before taking on a larger planning workload.
Skills you will develop
Planning the outing
Match the proposed trip to the boat and crew rather than starting with an ambitious destination. Identify options if the conditions change.
Understanding the venue
Consider local navigation, weather and water movement. Experience at one sailing area does not automatically transfer to another.
Managing the return
Keep track of time and progress so the return remains manageable. A good outward leg does not compensate for an overlooked arrival problem.
Training and assessment
Delivery depends on the centre and conditions. Confirm whether an excursion is planned and what happens if weather prevents it. This guide describes a training focus; the provider should identify the exact syllabus and certificate.
