This is the advanced shorebased course commonly taken before advanced practical cruising and Yachtmaster-level assessment.

- What it is not
- Passing the theory does not shorten the sea time any Yachtmaster certificate requires.

The course in context
This shorebased course develops the navigation and passage-planning knowledge used for more demanding coastal and offshore sailing. It is not a Yachtmaster practical certificate. Its value is learning to combine information, recognise uncertainty and make defensible decisions rather than treating chartwork, weather and rules as separate subjects.
Before you start
You should already be comfortable with Day Skipper-level theory. If basic chart symbols, tidal calculations or course plotting still feel unfamiliar, resolve those gaps first. Ask the tutor about a pre-course exercise or refresher if your earlier study was several years ago.
Skills you will develop
More demanding navigation
Work through situations where position, tidal movement and available sea room interact. The important habit is checking assumptions and understanding the consequences of a mistake.
Passage planning
Integrate pilotage, timing, weather and alternatives into a coherent plan. A good plan makes decision points visible instead of assuming conditions will match the forecast throughout.
Rules and weather interpretation
Develop the depth of knowledge expected of an experienced skipper. Discuss ambiguous or changing situations rather than relying only on uncomplicated textbook examples.
Training and assessment
Recognised centres offer shorebased study with assessed knowledge work. Confirm the current timetable, materials and assessment arrangements with the provider. Passing the theory course does not replace the sea-time requirements or independent examination for a Yachtmaster Certificate of Competence.
