RYA Yachtmaster Coastal

Yachtmaster Coastal is a Certificate of Competence for experienced coastal sailors.
This should have a separate page from Coastal Skipper Practical because they are not the same thing.
The Coastal Skipper course is training.
Yachtmaster Coastal involves independent examination against the certificate standard.

- Not an offshore qualification, and its commercial endorsement route is separate again.

The course in context
Yachtmaster Coastal assesses a sailor’s ability to skipper a yacht on coastal passages. It is an independently examined Certificate of Competence, not another name for the Coastal Skipper Practical course. The distinction matters when a school advertises preparation, course completion and an exam in the same package.
Before you start
Check the RYA’s current qualifying sea time, skipper experience, night hours and supporting certificate requirements directly. Some qualifying arrangements depend on previous training. Ask the centre to review your log before you commit to an examination date.
Skills you will develop
Command and communication
Demonstrate a coherent plan and give the crew useful instructions. The examiner needs to see your judgement, not only a successful result produced by an experienced crew acting independently.
Coastal navigation
Use navigation and pilotage methods appropriate to the situation. Be prepared to explain the information you rely on and the checks that would expose an error.
Practical seamanship
Handle the yacht and respond to changing circumstances with control. Preparation should include honest feedback on recurring weaknesses, not simply rehearse a fixed demonstration.
Training and assessment
A preparation course is optional training; the practical examination is the assessment for the certificate. Confirm who arranges the examiner, vessel and supporting documents. Completing preparation does not guarantee eligibility or a pass.
