RYA Yachtmaster Offshore
The level most professional and serious cruising sailors aim at: passages well offshore, any conditions.
RYA Yachtmaster Offshore is an advanced Certificate of Competence.
Preparation courses exist, but completing preparation does not automatically grant the certificate.
The examination tests the candidate's ability to skipper a cruising yacht safely and competently.
The site should always publish the latest RYA prerequisites rather than hard-coding old mileage requirements because these requirements can change.

- Holding it does not make you commercially qualified in Australia. AMSA administers that separately.

The course in context
Yachtmaster Offshore recognises an experienced skipper through an independent practical examination. It is aimed at sailors whose command, navigation and seamanship have been developed over meaningful passages, not only during a short intensive course. Preparation is a chance to refine and demonstrate those abilities.
Before you start
The RYA sets detailed requirements for qualifying mileage, passages, skipper time, recency and supporting certificates. Check the current official exam page and have your log reviewed. A total mileage figure on its own is not enough to establish that you meet all the conditions.
Skills you will develop
Passage judgement
Balance navigation, weather, crew capability and the yacht’s condition when making decisions. The useful standard is a plan that remains manageable if one assumption turns out to be wrong.
Command under assessment
Brief and supervise a crew while maintaining your own awareness. Delegation should free you to make decisions without losing track of what is happening.
Reliable seamanship
Show consistent handling and knowledge across a range of tasks. Preparation can reveal habits that work on your own boat but do not transfer well to an unfamiliar yacht.
Training and assessment
The practical exam is distinct from any preparation course. Ask about the yacht used, examination arrangements and required documents. Commercial endorsement and Australian permissions are separate matters; do not treat the title as a universal licence for professional work.
