RYA Youth Racing Modules
Starts, mark roundings and the rules, for sailors who have stopped wondering how to sail and started wondering how to win.
The RYA runs racing modules alongside the Youth Sailing Scheme, usually described at start, intermediate and advanced levels.
Typical content across the modules:
Australian club racing is strong and cheap to access. For most families a season of club racing plus one module is a better investment than a series of modules with no racing between them.

- Stage 3 and 4 sailors joining a club racing fleet.
- What it is not
- Not a substitute for racing. The modules make sense alongside a season, not instead of one.

The course in context
Youth racing training introduces the structure and decisions of sailing around a racecourse with other boats. It can provide a motivating way to practise, but it is not the only worthwhile progression after learning to sail. Start with an environment that values enjoyment and safe participation over results.
Before you start
Ask which racing module is actually offered and what sailing standard it assumes. A child should be able to manage the boat without using all their attention before adding starts, rules and nearby competitors.
Skills you will develop
Understanding the course
Learn how a race is organised and how to identify the route. Reducing uncertainty allows the sailor to focus on controlling the boat.
Rules and awareness
Connect racing rules with practical situations around other competitors. Coaching should encourage predictable decisions rather than aggressive behaviour.
Reviewing performance
Use starts, turns and course choices as learning opportunities. Finishing position alone can hide genuine improvements or weaknesses.
Training and assessment
This page describes a progression area, not a single certificate called Youth Racing. Centres and clubs offer different introductory and development programmes. Confirm the named course, coaching support and suitability of the boat.
